hey everyone it's Damon i want to tell

0:02

you about the best decision I ever made

0:04

in my life and one of the

0:07

hardest nine years ago I quit drinking

0:10

not because I ever got in trouble not

0:11

because anybody ever told me I needed to

0:13

or I got a DUI or anything like that but

0:15

because I started to feel like I wasn't

0:17

showing up as the person I wanted to be

0:18

or the leader I wanted to be welcome to

0:20

the Learn It All Podcast the show for

0:22

today's leaders who want to get ahead

0:24

and stay ahead because we believe great

0:26

leaders aren't born or made we're always

0:28

in the making and I'm Damon Lebby

0:30

two-time bestselling author and CEO of

0:32

Learn It a live learning platform that

0:34

has helped upskill over two million

0:36

people over the past three decades crazy

0:39

as it may sound to some of you drinking

0:41

has been part of my life since I was 17

0:42

years old it was just normal buying beer

0:45

with our fake IDs in high school then it

0:47

led to great times in college playing

0:50

sports and going out and having drinks

0:52

afterwards then with work it was

0:54

business dinners weekends concerts ball

0:57

games alcohol was always there and for a

The role alcohol played in his personal, professional, and social life

1:00

long time it was totally fine it totally

1:02

worked until it didn't i would say about

1:04

nine months before I quit drinking i

1:05

started asking myself what would my life

1:07

look like if I didn't drink would I feel

1:10

better would I be sharper and am I

1:13

taking away years of my life by beating

1:14

up my body putting it through the toll

1:16

of drinking i saw my grandfather live to

1:18

100 years old because he took really

1:20

really good care of himself didn't drink

1:22

a lot exercise all the time and then his

1:25

son my dad died at 62 years old of

1:28

cancer and it wasn't because he was a

1:30

big drinker but I saw the toll that

1:32

drinking and stress and everything that

1:34

he did happened to him and I'm sure it

1:37

contributed to him getting cancer and

1:39

eventually passing away at an early age

1:41

i thought to myself I want to make a big

1:43

change and today I want to share that

1:45

story with you but I also want to go

1:47

deeper than just a story because I'm not

1:49

here to preach to you and tell you

1:50

because I quit drinking that you should

1:52

quit drinking i'm not a doctor i'm not a

1:55

scientist but I want to share with you

1:57

the exact steps that I took that worked

The turning point: noticing the impact on his health, energy, and finances

2:00

for me in making a big change in my life

2:02

whether it's drinking whether it's

2:04

eating habits let's say maybe you say

2:06

yes too much or maybe even something

2:08

like you want to get out of a

2:09

relationship that you know is not

2:10

working i'm going to share with you the

2:12

exact steps I took to make it stick my

2:14

hope is that today you're going to walk

2:16

away from this episode with some real

2:18

tools that might help you make a shift

2:20

of your own that you'll be super proud

2:22

of there was no rock bottom moment for

2:24

me i never got a DUI i never got in a

2:27

fight and got kicked out of a bar but

2:29

over time I started to feel it and and

2:32

the wear and tear on my body the cost

2:34

living in downtown San Francisco going

2:36

out with clients and co-workers and

2:37

buddies all the time it just felt like

2:40

it was part of the job but eventually

2:42

and it took a long time I started

2:44

wondering is this holding me back more

2:45

than it's helping me i wanted to live a

2:47

healthier life i wanted to feel clearer

2:49

i wanted to be sharp all the time and I

2:52

wanted to feel proud of how I was

2:53

showing up and to be honest I also

2:55

wanted to save some money going out with

2:56

your buddies your friends taking your

2:58

wife out for a nice dinner with a group

Reflecting on family: longevity, legacy, and leadership

3:00

you look at your credit card bill the

3:02

next day make it really add up and at

3:04

the time I decided to quit drinking i

3:06

didn't have any children but I knew I

3:08

wanted to and I started thinking about

3:09

the example I wanted to be for my kids

3:11

and I also thought about the wear and

3:13

tear I'm putting on my body now i may

3:15

not be around long enough to see them

3:17

through the best parts of their life i

3:18

want to be proactive and make this

3:20

change now it was really important to me

3:21

to think about not only what kind of dad

3:23

I eventually wanted to be but I thought

3:25

I'd be a better husband and also the

3:27

kind of leader I wanted to be at work

3:29

and at home here's what helped me get

3:30

there these are five real steps I took

3:33

and I think you can apply them to almost

3:34

any major lifestyle change step one was

3:38

get curious i started reading books

3:40

about quitting drinking behavior change

3:42

and I had an honest conversation with

3:44

people close to me who have already made

3:45

the choice to give up drinking one

3:47

person I really admired is my best

3:49

friend who'd been sober for about 8

3:51

years at the time i I sat down with him

3:53

and talked about uh my situation and got

3:56

his thoughts on how it worked for him

3:57

and that curiosity gave me permission to

3:59

explore without pressure i didn't need

Step 1: Get curious—books, conversations, and quiet exploration

4:01

to go out and talk to a lot of people

4:03

about it i just had a couple few that I

4:05

was even considering it i read books and

4:07

I watched documentaries and all that

4:09

information and curiosity helped me

4:12

think through what I was going to do

4:14

step two I journaled i'll be honest I'm

4:16

not a big journal guy but I sat down and

4:18

I wrote out why I wanted to quit what I

4:21

was scared of what I hoped life would

4:23

look like without it let's say in a year

4:24

or two I lost a bunch of weight i was

4:27

healthier i was more confident in myself

4:29

i wouldn't have to deal with the

4:30

fuzziness or being hung over and those

4:33

are all things that really motivated me

4:35

and put things in perspective that

4:37

process it brought it into focus it made

4:40

it feel real and also something that was

4:42

cool was it actually made me feel less

4:43

anxious step three now this is an

4:45

important one and I wouldn't recommend

4:47

doing this until you're really committed

Step 2: Journal—getting fears and hopes onto the page

4:50

step three is I told people that was a

4:53

huge for me i told my mom and my best

4:55

friend because when you say it out loud

4:57

you're accountable and I've always been

4:59

somebody that I don't want to

5:00

overpromise and underproduce if I say

5:02

something I'm gonna do it and especially

5:04

when it comes to somebody you love you

5:06

don't want to let them down my mom was a

5:08

little confused when I told her because

5:09

she didn't think it was that much of a

5:11

big deal for me but she was very proud

5:13

of me and said "Look I'll be there

5:14

whenever you need me." And my best

5:16

friend said he would support me in any

5:18

way possible after I had these

5:19

conversations that's when I knew I was

5:21

very serious step four I committed i

5:24

went all in i picked a date and I said

5:26

"This is going to be my last drink." And

5:28

I did it and I remember it like it was

Step 3: Tell someone—why accountability changed everything

5:30

yesterday it was actually at my good

5:32

friend and co-orker Courtney Richie's

5:34

engagement party and after the party

5:36

ended I went to Original Joe's in San

5:39

Francisco with a couple of my good

5:40

friends and co-workers Evans and Jamie

5:44

we order a bottle of wine and I said

5:46

"Ladies cheers to you this is going to

5:48

be my last drink ever." And they laughed

5:51

and said "Come on Damon you can't be

5:52

serious." And I did it that was it the

5:56

first month felt very slow time dragged

5:59

i even went to a couple AA meetings it

Step 4: Commit—picking a date and making it real

6:01

was an incredible community but it just

6:04

wasn't for me and I think that's

6:05

important because if you're going to

6:07

make a big lifestyle change like this

6:09

you got to find what's going to work for

6:10

you if you try to push a situation on

6:13

yourself that maybe you're uncomfortable

6:15

and it's going to be hard to be

6:16

consistent as much as I thought the AA

6:18

meetings were great and they're great

6:20

for so many people I just thought that

6:22

the path I was going to take to quit

6:24

drinking was going to be a different one

6:26

i took one day at a time and I just kept

6:28

going and one day turned into two weeks

6:31

turned into two months and like I said

6:33

it turned into nine years in step five I

6:36

leaned into discomfort the first big

6:38

party after quitting at this big mansion

6:41

in Silicon Valley this big-time mortgage

6:43

broker and it was like a frat party for

Early challenges: awkward parties, AA meetings, and finding his own path

6:45

adults and the very first thing

6:47

everybody did was they got around and

6:49

they were going to have tequila shots

6:50

and this was a week or two after I quit

6:52

drinking and I was first of all super

6:54

anxious how am I going to explain to

6:55

people that I'm not drinking and I

6:57

didn't know how to say no so I literally

6:59

made an excuse and I went and kind of

7:01

hid in the back room and and just waited

7:04

till it was over over time I got much

7:06

more comfortable and I stopped caring

7:08

about what other people thought because

7:10

the truth is at the end of the day

7:12

people don't really care what you do

7:14

they might ask a question or whatever

7:16

but within a couple minutes they just go

7:18

back to their own thing and if anything

7:21

I found over time when I tell people

7:23

that I quit drinking they tell me that

7:25

they admire me for doing it and they

7:27

even ask questions like "Man I would

7:29

really like to do that as well." And can

7:31

you share with me a little bit about

7:32

what you did if you are looking at

7:33

making a a big decision like this don't

7:36

be anxious or worried about what other

7:37

people think about you do what's best

7:39

for yourself and put yourself and your

7:40

family first what changed after I quit

7:42

drinking i would say within 2 weeks I

7:45

started feeling sharper more focused

7:47

more energy i slept better i started

7:49

eating better and I felt much more

Step 5: Lean into discomfort—navigating social pressure and anxiety

7:51

confident and also another thing one of

7:53

my habits was if I had a stressful

7:56

personal professional situation I would

7:58

have a couple drinks I think a lot of

8:00

people do to to numb the the fear or the

8:02

anxiety and getting out of my my comfort

8:05

zone I didn't have alcohol to help numb

8:08

me in these situations and what I found

8:10

out early on was that first of all we

8:13

all know that that's only temporary

8:14

drinking to make you feel better during

8:16

your problems but facing it with a clear

8:19

sharp mind head on was 10x better i

8:22

didn't need to numb the situation i just

8:24

faced it and that was an absolute game

8:26

changer for me overall I realized I just

8:29

became more present at work at home and

8:31

in life and 9 years later I can say that

8:34

this changed my life for the better and

8:37

I'm really proud of myself for being

8:38

able to do so and I look at some of the

8:40

things I've accomplished over the last

8:42

nine years and to be honest I'm not sure

8:44

I would have been able to accomplish

What changed: sleep, clarity, confidence, and sharper decision-making

8:46

what I have if I hadn't give up drinking

8:48

i've written two books launched this

8:49

podcast learning really well and I think

8:53

that I've taken my leadership to the

8:55

next level but I guess you'd have to ask

8:56

my team and our customers about that one

8:58

maybe drinking isn't your thing maybe

9:00

for you it's sugar or saying yes too

9:02

much or maybe you need to make a change

9:04

about the people who surround you or

9:07

even just getting better at managing

9:08

your calendar whatever it is you can

9:10

make that change and let me remind you

9:12

how start by getting curious write it

9:14

down tell someone commit and be willing

9:18

to get uncomfortable that my friends is

9:20

when growth happens i want to leave you

9:22

with a challenge what's one thing in

9:24

your life that's holding you back what

9:25

would your life look like without it and

9:27

who's one person you could tell once

9:29

you're ready to commit to help you get

Why alcohol used to be a coping mechanism—and how Damon replaced it

9:31

started that's it no pressure i just

9:33

wanted to share with you what helped me

9:36

and if I can do it you could do it too i

9:39

promise you that i want you to do one

9:41

more favor before I sign off i want you

9:44

to think about someone who could benefit

9:46

from this episode maybe somebody who's

9:48

had a hard time changing who wants to

9:50

change send them this episode maybe it

9:52

could help them and look if you ever

9:54

want to have a conversation send me a

9:56

note i'd be happy to jump on a quick

9:58

call i've been so fortunate to have

The long-term impact on his career, health, and creativity

10:00

people help me and I'd like to give back

10:02

in return until next time stay curious

10:05

keep learning and have a great day
